TERMINATED CONTRACT
Statement By Surgeon
“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Sept. 15.
Mr D. D. McKenzie, whose appointment as part-time neuro-surgeon at the Auckland Hospital was terminated at the Auckland Hospital Board’s last meeting, has issued the following statement;
“I have accepted the fact that the Auckland Hospital Board has dispensed with my services after 24 years in establishing an efficient neuro-surgical unit there. “The reason given by the board was that I refused to accept an administrative order.
“Had it been merely an administrative order, I was bound to obey it and would have done so. In my opinion, it was more than that, as it cut sharply across a fundamental principle, of treatment.
“My sincerity was questioned and I was presented with an ultimatum. I refused to yield, as I was willing to risk the termination of virtually a life’s work at the hospital for a matter of principle. It is now terminated.
“My main regret is that publication of comment by the board has rendered this explanation necessary.”
