Youth Week Dance

Twelve thousand bottles of beverage and 1500 packets of potato chips were ordered by the Christchurch Junior Council’s youth week committee for a dance held at Canterbury Court last evening. Thousands of young persons attended the dance and free buses were run from Cathedral square to Addington between 9.30 pun. and 10 p.m. The dance ended at 1 a.m. Music for dancing was provided by three orchestras led by Rod Derrett, Tommy Kahi, and Max Merritt. The activities were compered by the president of the Hi Fi Club, Mr Des Britten, of Wellington. . Three guest artists sang and other items were given by the “Southerners,” of Christchurch.

Among those who helped organise the dance were the committee’s chairman (Mr R. Stephens) the organising secretary (Mr J, Francis), and Messrs G. Perkins, P. Woods and P. Chapple. If youth week becomes an annual event in-Christchurch it is hoped the dance will also be held annually.
