TANKER FOR ANTARCTIC

Rear-Admiral

Gives Support (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Sept. 15. Discussions between New Zealand and the United States regarding a replacement for H.M.N.Z.S. Endeavour, the former New Zealand Antarctic supply ship, are in progress and the United States Antarctic commander (Rear-Admiral D. M. Tyree) has supported the choice of an oil tanker.

“Previously I was undecided between a cargo ship and a tanker but I support the New Zealand Navy’s choice of a 4850-ton tanker of the Nespelen elass.’’ RearAdmiral Tyree said today He had no idea when discussions would be completed as they were at diplomatic rather than naval level. The Nespelen-class tanker carries 6000 gallons of fuel. Rear-Admiral Tyree said such a small tanker could carry the cargo load required to service Scott Base as well as fuel requirements. In addition this ship could help the United States' Antarctic operations.

At present two United States tankgrs were used and if New Zealand chose a tanker as a store ship then one of these could be withdrawn.

Rear-Admiral Tyree said he hoped to be able to take the Scott Base leader (Mr A Roberts) south for a visit about October 2.
