MAORI LAND COURTS

Young Leaders’ Recommendation

(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA. Sept. 4

The Maori Land Courts should be retained, but the legislation should be modified and modernised A recommendation on these lines was carried at the final session of the Waiariki young Maori leaders’ conference a* Rotorua. The elders, who moved the recommendation which stemmed from round table discussions, said: “The mantle of protection” provided by the courts from the earliest days of land exploitation in New Zealand should be preserved. Mr R Warbrick said there was a need to overhaul the Maori Affairs Act in which there were several instances of discrimination. There was no right of appeal in the act as it applied to the Land Court.
