Cycling SIX-DAY RACE

Australians To Compete (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. Australian amateur cycling officials have nominated four top road riders to compete in “ys J' ear ' s Six-day AuektondV. eltangton cycling race. The Australians will arrive on October 23, a week before the race starts. Confirmation that the Australians would compete w»as received in Wellington this evening by the race organiser. Mr K. Balfour. The Australian riders will be A. Grindal (Victoria) D Gee (Victoria), B. Drew (New South Wales), and K. Kilmarton (Tasmania). They filled the firrt four places in last week’s Australian road championship. Grindial, who brilliantly won the Australian title for the second year in succession, will captain the team. He competed in the New Zealand event last year, and finished seventh. Grindal's partner last year the Olympic rider, F. Brazier’ was not available tor selection’ having broken an arm in a recent accident. The Australian officials have made their choice on the advice of Grindal and Brazier. Both these riders told Australian officials they had under-esti-mated the New Zealanders last year, and suggested that the Australian team be enlarged to four men. World Road Title To Van Looy (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BERNE, Sept. 3. Belgium’s Rik van Looy retained his professional road cycling world championship at Berne today. In a thrilling finish, van Looy sprinted past Nino Defilippis of Italy over the last 100 yards, and won by inches, with 12 other riders in close attendance. Defilippis claimed second place and Raymond Poulidor (France) was third. Hamilton to Tauranga Race To J. Holloway (NZ. Press Association) HAMILTON, Sept. 4. I J. R. Holloway (Marlborough) won the two-dav cycle race from Hamilton to Tauranga and return-over4he week-end in 7hr 57min 38sec. with R. D. Johnstone (Auckland) second, in 7hr 58min 12sec, and T. G. Lankow (Wanganui) third, in 7hr 58min 51sec. Of the 60 starters, 48 finished the course. The first junior home was the Rotorua cyclist, G. Grey.
