This puts City, last year’s runner-up, into third position on the final 1961 table. In Keys Cup matches, Neerlandia beat University to retain its four-point lead. The second team, High School Old Boys, beat University and Western beat Wanderers. Results were:— HURLEY SHIELD City 2, Western 1. KEYS CUP Neerlandia 3, University 0. Old Boys 4, City 2. Western 2, Wanderers 0.
CITY v. WESTERN A goal in the last few seconds of the match gave City a win over Western. The City selector, A. Wilson, had taken the field in the first half when J. Adams received a leg injury, and it was Wilson who hit the ball into the net to score City’s second goal with only seconds left for play. G. Richards gave an accomplished display in goal for City, and has lost little of the ability which brought him higher honours several seasons ago. A. West wood and R. Herbert were sound full-backs, and J. le Poidevin had little difficulty in keeping the Western centreforward under control Of tbe City forwards, B. Rumbold and R. Bruce were the best. From the centreforward position -Rumbold played a roving game and combined well with Bruce and E. Bennett Bruce gave a good attacking digplay. G. Wilson, on the right wing, put over some fine crosses. D. Smith, in the Western goal, was solid. He was unlucky to be beaten by a penalty shot. City’s D. Niven took the penalty, and Smith saved well, but the referee ruled that he had moved too soon and Niven was given another chance. Smith made another good attempt, but to rto avail.
W. McKenna was strong on clearing but weak in control, and I. Laby, at left full-back, was little better. P. Frost, in his usual position at left half, had a good match, and the right-half, W. Rodger, was also sound. R. Durant was not a success at centre-forward. M. Shardlow gave another good exhibition on the right wing, and the power of his boot lifted some good chances into the City goal-mouth, keeping Richards active. A. Bishop, at inside-left, was a weak link, but the other inside forward, K. Olley, managed a lot of good work. City’s goals were scored by Niven (from a penalty) and A. Wilson. Olley scored for Western. Mr I. E. Billcliff was the referee.
Cyclist Hurt.— Abrasions and concussion were suffered by Mr Gordon Miller, 34 Santa Rosa avenue, when he fell off his bicycle on Saturday afternoon. He was treated at the casualty department of the Christchurch Hospital and sent home.
