LAYING OF CABLE

U.K. Link With Canada (N.Z.P.A,-Reuter—Copyripht) SOUTHAMPTON, (England), Sept. 2. The British cable-laying ship Monarch left Southampton last night to lay the last 500-mile stretch of the transAttentic section of the Commonwealth telephone cable. Cable and wireless. Limited. who are jointly responsible with the Canadian Over-, seas Telecommunications Corporation of Montreal for financing, laying and maintaining this section of the cable, said the mission would be completed by early October. The cable, which has been laid in three stretches, will link Oban in Scotland with Hampden in Newfoundland. Once the final splice has been completed, six weeks of exhaustive tests will be made before the cable is ready for the official opening early in November. The cable will ultimately circle the world and will link Britain, Canada. New Zealand and Australia. Cable and Wireless said proposals for a third section linking Australia with Malaya and Hong Kong by way of New Guinea and North Borneo were being studied by the Governments concerned.
