CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

Roll Numbers And Staff

The prominence given in the press to the shortage of teachers in State schools might make it of public interest to give the figures of Roman Catholic primary school education in the metropolitan area of Christchurch, said the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce) yesterday. Bishop Joyce was opening new classrooms at the Convent of the Sisters of the Missions in Ferry road. In the city area there were now 4692 pupils in Roman Catholic primary schools and there were 128 teachers, making an average of 368 pupils to each teacher, he said.

“These figures speak for themselves.’’ said Bishop Joyce. In the Roman Catholic post-primary schools in Christchurch there were 1890 pupils with 69 teachers, he said.
