Difficulties With Maori Speech
(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA. Sept. 3. The difficulties "Maori children experienced in following the spoken word when taught by immigrant school teachers was mentioned at today’s concluding plenary session of the Waiariki young Maori leaders’ conference at Rotorua. This led to a recommendation urging more Maori teachers to apply for positions in education board schools where there were significant numbers of Maori children.
Mrs M. Penfold said a number of immigrants were teaching throughout New Zealand and Maori children found it difficult to follow English spoken with an accent.
She said 70 per cent, of Maori children attending school were in education board Schools.
