PURCHASE OF VEHICLES
“Persons Should Have Licence”
(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 25. Motor - vehicle vendors should have an obligation to see that purchasers were licensed to drive, said Mr M. A. Connelly (Labour, Riccarton) in Parliament. Persons incapable of driving, or having some defect that kept them from obtaining a licence, could be a danger to the public if allowed to purchase a motorvehicle, he said, speaking in discussion on Ministerial replies to members’ questions, Earlier this session, Mr Connelly asked the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) whether he knew that motorvehicles were being sold to persons without a driver's licence, who might immediately ride the machines away from the place of sale. Minister’s Reply To this, Mr McAlpine replied: “I am not so aware, and I may say that a driver’s licence is not a prerequisite to the purchase of any type of motor-vehicle, arid would point out that it is unlawful for any person not holding an appropriate driver’s licence to drive any motorvehicle on a public road. The purchaser of a motor-cycle, if he has sufficient knowledge of the law, and his eyesight and hearing are satisfactory, may get a sixweeks’ restricted licence to enable him to gain skill and experience in riding,”
