FILMS ON SUNDAYS
Amusement Tax Inquiry Whether or not Sunday film screenings for the benefit of swimming clubs can be held without the clubs being liable for the payment of amusement tax will be the subject of some “gentle inquiries’’ by the Canterbury Swimming Centre.
At the meeting of the centre’s management committee last evening a letter was received from the Papanui club seeking the centre's aid in gaining a refund of the £6 Is 8d amusement tax it
had had to pay for a Sunday film screening. The secretary (Mr J. H. Johnson) raid four or five clubs in Christchurch were affected and he suggested an approach to the Inland Revenue Department. The centre received money from the Government for educational purposes and thus came into the category of a charitable organisation to a certain extent.
Mr M. R. Duckimanton said the matter should be referred to the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association’s council to take the matter up with the head office of the department.
Miss D. Brown urged caution on the matter and her suggestion of quiet inquiries being made was adopted.
