TOWN MILK PRICE
Formula Use Questioned (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 22. A suggestion that the formula on which the price paid to town milk producers is based was broken when the price was set this year was made by Mr N. E. Kirk (Opposition, Lyttelton) in the House of Representatives this afternoon. Mr Kirk asked the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Shelton) to explain why this formula, agreed upon with the Town Milk Producers’ Federation in 1957, appeared to have been broken. In a note to his question. Mr Kirk said that when the 1956-57 price was set, the federation agreed to a formula which provided that "rises and falls in the guaranteed price equivalent of finest cheese subsequent to the 1956-57 milk year will be translated into the town milk price, according to the existing rates of a penny a pound butterfat, equalling 0.6 pence a gallon of milk."
