VALUATION SERVICES
Amalgamation “Undesirable” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 22. The Director-General of Lands (Mr D. N. R. Webb) can see no merit in a proposal by the Public Service Commission for the creation of a central valuation authority. He told the Royal Commission on State Services today that he could see no point in amalgamations unless worthwhile savings could be achieved, and he did not consider that either the establishment of a central authority or the amalgamation of the Lands and Valuation departments would mean any savings in field staff. “Ther: would be no reduction in the number of valuations needed for the Valuation Department's routine work, and extra staff would be necessary to handle the Land Department’s work. We find it necessary, in the normal course of business, to take men off one job to do another more urgently required. The only avenue of possible savings by amalgamation would be in draughting services,” he said.
