NOISE IN HOUSE
MJ*.s Rebuked By Speaker
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Aug. 22. The Speaker (Mr Algie) ehided Cabinet Ministers and other members of the House of Representatives tonight for noise during the Budget debate. He threatened to adjourn the House until the disturbance ceased. Interjections were not the i trouble, but the hum of con- : versation between members was steadily rising when Mr Aigie intervened with his threat to use "the extreme power” of the Speaker. He said he had noted conversation between Ministers and suggested that, if they must confer, they do it in the lobby of the House. "There is more noise being broadcast than there ought to be." he said. He also noted that members were standing about in the aisles of the House in contravention of the rules. There were some 36 mem. bers still to speak in the debate. he said. If the noise persisted, he would have to take it as an indication that members did not want to hear the debate.
There ..-as a sharp decline in private conversations as Mrs E. Tombleson (Government, Gisborne) resumed her speech.
