LIAISON IN EAST

Corps Urged To Promote Trade

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 22. The establishment of a corps of young New Zealanders to develop trade-in southeast Asian markets was advocated by Mr M. Moohan (Opposition, Petone) in the House of Representatives tonight. Mr Moohan suggested members of the corps should be recruited from trade and industry and should be attached to New Zealand trade offices or diplomatic posts in South-east Asia to learn the countries’ languages and customs.

They should then be assured of permanent careers with the Government's Trade Promotion Division.

“I believe a knowledge of the customs and languages of these South-east Asian countries is essential if we are to develop our trade and ascertain the market requirements

of the people in those areas,” Mr Moohan said. “We expect people in these countries to speak our language all the time, but we don’t do them the common courtesy " of learning their language.” Mr Moohan said he was sure many young New Zealanders would eagerly accept the opportunity to work in South-east Asia. "If we get in early, we will see big dividends from this m about 10 years,” he added.
