“Necessary” Wives
The British Inland Revenue Department has tightened up on allowances which in the past it has allowed for wives accompanying their husbands on business trips. In a pamphlet dealing with expenses claims by directors and executives earning £2OOO or more a year, it says a wife should have practical qualifications directly associated with her husband's business trip which she has used to assist him regularly during the tour. It should alternatively be shown that her presence was necessary to act as hostess at a series of business entertaining occasions which were an essential part of her trip. Her expenses might also be allowed where her husband is in such poor health It would be unreasonable to expect him to travel alone. But her expenses could not be allowed if she travelled with her husband to avoid separation or to visit relatives abroad—(London, August 7.)
