Sportsman’s Notebook UNIVERSITY RUGBY MATCH TO MARK ANNIVERSARY
The annual Rugby match i between the University of Canterbury and Otago University will have added interest this year. It will be the curtain-raiser to the match between France and Otago at Carisbrook on Saturday and it is also the seventyfifth anniversary of the first game between the Universities. During that week-end the Otago University Rugby Club will celebrate its seven-ty-fifth anniversary, and' the Canterbury team will be its guest at a dinner .after the match. ’ In the first game played in 1886 Canterbury won by eight points to six; .' But formany years the strong. Otago University teanut regularly won the annual fixture." However, during the last tew years Canterbury has had by far the better of the games and last year recorded its biggest win, by 31 points to eight. This year both teams will Ibe depleted by representative demands. Otago has . five players in the Otago team to play France, and Canterbury has nine players in the Canterbury team for the southern tour. . . < Because of the number of players not available; Canterbury will be fielding some of its promising junior* in its baek-line. Smith. . ♦ ♦ ♦ Soccer Match The Hurley Shield soccer match between Western and , Technical which will be played at Elmwood Park on Saturday afternoon, is one held over from the ninth round of the competition. It was not played then because Western was playing a Chatham Cup match in Timaru. Technical is the leader in this year’s competition, and Western has won \ the Hurley Shield for the last nine seasons. ♦ • * Primary Schools’ Sports The annual Primary School*’ winter sports tournament will be held this year in Christchurch today and tomorrow. Eight Rugby teams representing Ashburton, South Canterbury, Christchurch primary and Christchurch intermediate, schools will play at Rugby Park and Malvern Park. ' Each group will be represented by one under Bst team ;and one under 6st 71b team. Basketball teams from the .same groups will play at the ' Hagjey courts, the grades j being over and under sft. | All these games will begin lat 10 o’clock this morning. I At 2.30 p.m. tomorrow at the PoJu grounds two boys’ hockey teams from the i Christchurch intermediate ■ schools will play the Hatch 'Cup teams. Girl?’ hockey between Christchurch intermediate and printer? school teams will be played at.Hagley starting at 2 pm. A team representing the Christchurch primary schools will meet an intermediate team at soccer today at 3 p.m. The game will be played at Malvern Park. leg and severe concussion during his playing time with Gordon. Earlier this year he was dropped to reserve grade. In spite of this, he has scored 93 first-grade points this season and 740 points in his career with Gordon first grade. This unusual tally of points over the years has not helped him in big football—his representative career having been limited to a tour of New Zealand With the New South Wales Country team in 1954. But he can claim the distinction, of having played for the All Blacks; he was the guest full-back for the New Zealand side that played Queensland at Sydney last year, when the AU Blacks were on their way to South Africa. • ♦ Table Tennis A large number of Canterbury table tennis players will travel to play in the West Coast championships this week-end. Among them will be the men’s singles titleholder, J. Armstrong, who hSs had a most Successful season. This season Armstrong has already won the Canterbury, North Otago, and South Canterbury titles. ♦ * » Schools’ Tourney A party of more than 75 pupils from the Riccarton High School will travel to Dunedin ! today for their annual sports tournament with the Kaikorai Valley High School. Competitions will be held -tomorrow in socder, Rugby, basketball, and boys' and girls’ hockey. Both these schools are in their fourth year of existence, and this is the third annual sports tournament.
