Tenancy Act
Sir,—"R.W.” is certainly disillusioned if he thinks that Abraham Lincoln would offer people like him any sympathy because he was most strongly opposed to those who exploit others. Lincoln deprived the slaveowners of their “freedom" to have slaves, and did not give them £20,000,000 in compensation as did Grey’s Government in 1034. Lincoln also deprived the Confederate States of the right to secede from the union, and even went to war with them over it. "R.W." wants freedom to charge what he likes, and to evict “undesirable” tenants without having to provide alternative accommodation for them. His pleadings for "freedom" are like those of the "poor oppressed” mill-owners against Shaftsbury's Factory and Mine Act concerning tlie exploitation of young children. —Yours, etc., DISILLUSIONED NATIONALIST. August 9, 1961.
