TALK ON AUSTRIA
Women’s Group At Lincoln “Austria and its people” —the programme for the August meeting of the Lincoln College Women’s Group —was contributed by one of its members, Viennese-born, Mrs Irma Hand. Mrs Hand spoke of teaching in a one-teacher school in a remote mountain valley, before the war. School began at 8 a.m. and in winter little children skied to school, sometimes a distance of several miles, holding lanterns to light their way in the winter darkness. Skis were utility articles—a means of transport—and if proper skis could not be afforded, thin strips of board were tied to the children’s feet. Mrs Hand also described the elaborate preparations necessary for Viennese dishes and made recipes available from an Austrian cookery book.
