SELECTOR TO RETIRE
Mr G. 0. Allen
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, August- 7. The chairman of the England cricket selectors (Mr G. O. “Gubby” Allen) will retire, the “Daily Express” cricket writer, Frank Rostron reported today. He said that when England’s “Mr Cricket” announced the team next Sunday for the fifth and final test against Australia, to start at the Oval on August 17, it would be for the last time. Rostron said Mr Allen’s retirement meant the “guns of the ‘Allen-must-go’ minority opposition are already spiked.” He said Mr Alien’s critics were claiming his powers had become too great and that they had gone far beyond the selection chamber. In seven y’ears of office. Australian-born Mr Allen had become English cricket’s most powerful figure.
