Increase In Use Overseas

More and more persons overseas are using contact lenses in preference to snectacles. according to a Christchurch optician. Mr E Curtis, who arrived back in the city yesterday after attending two conferences in the United States and Britain Mr Curtis said that imnrovements were taking place in both the manufacture and fitting of lenses to such an extent that larger numbers of persons hitherto barred by age were now being fitted with them. The fitting of bifocal micro-corneal lenses had also been begun successfully, said Mr Curtis. While overseas Mr Curtis attended a conference in Denver and another in London. The conference in Denver was that of the American Optometric Association and was attended by 1800 opticians. It was held in a new 52-storeyed Hilton Hotel in Denver built specially for conventions in 1960. he said. After the American conference Mr Curtis went to London for the International Ophthalmic and Optical Congress. which was attended by 600 opticians from almost every country in the world. Nine opticians from the Dominion attended, he said Running concurrently with the congress were two optical trade d : splays. one of which occunied the whole of Earls Court, said Mr Curtis. After travelling back to New Zealand by way of the Continent. Jordan. Israel. Hong Kong, and Australia. Mr Curtis said that the standard of eye care in the Domirjion was as high as that of any country he had visited.
