STUDENTS’ SHOW
“Leave It To The Gods” In "Leave It To The Gods” the young actors of the post primary department of the Teachers’ College have the nucleus of a pleasing show. This was obvious in the opening performance at the Civic Theatre last evening. However. as matters stand. “Leave It To The Gods” needs much more rapid pace, more decisive use of the curtain. and the co-ordination that experience of actual performance should give. There are some good scenes played against remarkably colourful back-drops. The Congo incident was an interesting example of what the students can do. The moments with the United Nations, on the other hand, were seldom rewarding. The acting of the Gods, which should add to the vivacity of the show, seemed at most times to lack animation. That the opening scene should actuallv be designed to convey their languor and boredom was not really a happy idea The scene could be shortened to advantage. Perhaps the most snrightlv performance was that of Pollv Astbury as Sabrina: but here the producer should have used the curtain at the critical moment. The male ballets were all successful, and the Russian athletes struck a note of genuine comedy. The May Dav parade in Moscow gave a chance for some good crowd scenes, and Murray Lints, who was Mr Khrushchev, showed originality and enterprise. As the revue proceeded. Judith Williams. as Venus, also made a decided impression.
“Leave It To The Gods” will be playing at the Civic Theatre every evening for the remainder of the week. —C.E.S
