BUILDING PERMITS UP BY £20,699,355
A substantial rise in permits issued for alterations and additions to buildings other than houses and flats is the outstanding feature of this year’s building statistics according to the Government statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). In value, these permits have increased by £12.307.887 or 68.41 per cent. Permits for
houses increased by 819 or 3.47 per cent, while values increased by £6,137.425 or 9.25 per cent. Alterations to houses increased by £996,161 (12.8 per cent.). For the year ended March 31, 1961, 23.500 houses and flats were comoleted, compared with 21.600 the previous year. This is the largest number since statistics were first collected and 1900 in ex. cess of the previous record of 21.600 which was established during 1959-60. The total value of all building permits issued for New Zealand for the year was £134.712.120 —an increase of £20.699.355 <18.16 per cent.) on the 1960 record figure of £114,012.765. Details of the 1960-61 building permits and values are as follows with last year's figures in parenthesis: —New houses and flats, 24.397. £72,476.202 (23.578 £66.338,777): other new buildings, 1618. £23,135,118 (3704 £21,877,036): alterations and additions to houses and flats, 32,878. £8,802,601 (30.022. £7,806.440); alterations and additions to other buildings, 11.609. £3O 298,199 ( 8370, £17,990,512). Total, all buildings. 70.502 £134,712.120 (65.674. £114.012,765).
