INSECT KILLER
Device On Ship "The Press’’ Special Service AUCKLAND, July 17. The Tongan Government’s ocean-going tug Hifofua has an insecticuitar—an electronic device for killing flying insects. The unit, designed by an American firm, has been fitted on the top deck abaft the funnel Two tube lamps are mounted one each side of a rectangular, stainless steel grid. The lamps attract flying insects at night, and when they hit the grid they are killed by electric shock. The equipment has been installed mainly for test purposes in an endeavour to ascertain its effectiveness against rhinoceros beetles and other crop-destroying flying insects. The master of the tug reports that already it has been effective in killing smaller insects including mosquitoes, which manage to reach the vessel when anchored off-shore at outer islands. A similar unit will be installed in the Tonga Copra Board vessel Aonui in the near future.
