Public Service Staffing
To be efficient the Public Service requires an adequate number of suitably qualified officers. But it will not recruit thtOTi or. if it does recruit them, will not retain them unless Government employment is held in reasonable esteem by the community, says the annual report of tlie Public Service Commission. The report says that although ’he salaries of senior public servants were increased during the year, subsequently greater increases were obtained by persons working in local bodies and some semi-gov-ernment organisations. Consequently, the service’s competitive position had not improved. For this and other reasons the staffing position had continued to deteriorate.
