SOUTHLAND HOPE
Shangri-La At | Trentham Shangri-La, Southland's lone but bright hope for the Whyte Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. did light exercise at Kiccarton yesterday, and was taken north last evening. Shangri-La is on her second campaign at Trentham. Her first was in the autumn, when she won the Suburban Handicap, seven furlongs, by two lengths from Cardinal King On the first day of that meeting she failed to win a place in the mile Thompson Handicap but was wide all the way in a big field. Since then Shangri-La has won the Dunedin Jockey Club's Winter Handicap under 9-12. and has also been placed at Riverton. For consistency few handicap performers can match her record : It first and 14 minor ptacmgs from 34 starts. _ She is now a six-year-old but did not race until she was five, and has built up her splendid record in about 18 months. Four wins and five placings ‘bis season have been worth Altogether she has earned £4752 10s. Big Chief Leaves For Trentham “Tile Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. July 4. The Ellerslie gelding Big Chief left by float today for Trentham He is entered in the Trentham Hurdles on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. Big Chief is also entered in the Winter Hurdles on the third day at Trentham, a race which he won last year. Lately Big Chief has been out of form although he managed a fourth in the' Remuera Hurdles, two miles, [at Ellerslie on June 5.
