SELECTIVE C.M.T.
Decision By Cabinet ? ’The Press’ Specie* Service WELLINGTON, July 3. The Government is believed to have approved the introduction of a scheme of selective compulsory military training. The scheme will apply only to the Army. Not only are the Air Force and Navy unable to take part in a training scheme of this type, but also the Chiefs of Staff of the Navy and the Air Force are opposed to its introduction. One of the grounds of their objection is understood to be the fecr that a selective service scheme covering only the Army would divert defence funds which might otherwise be spent on Navy and Air Force re-equipment. The Minister of Defence <Mr Eyre) would not comment on the question but said he still required a good deal of detail from the service departments before the proposed White Paper on defence could be prepared and submitted to Parliament. Mr Eyre said no announcement on any aspect of defence policy was planned before the White Paper was ready for presentation to Parliament, and this might take some weeks.
