Mail Deliveries
Sir. —I always understood Her Majesty’s mails had to go bhr'ough, no matter the perils or obstacles. I posted my driver’s licence to a Wellington authority for renewal and expected it back, as on previous occasions, on the second day after posting at this end. The return envelope was postmarked June 22 and would be in Christchurch on the 23rd. It was delivered by the postman on the 27th. On the same day I received a letter postmarked in Geraldine, June 23, 6 pm.. If these are examples of the “most efficient of Government departments,” that reputation is in jeopardy. Incidentally, I believe a postman once had to graduate from lower levels. Today anyone seems to be able to qualify for the job. I am wondering if my two letters were carried around until the postman had enough deliveries to justify his coming my way. I live in Avonhead.—Yours etc., SERVICE PLEASE. [The Chief Postmaster (Mr C. J. C. Simpson) said: “It appears that the correspondent has good cause for complaint. However, so that I may have the cause of the delay investigated, it will be necessary to obtain the envelopes of the letters referred to. Perhaps your correspondent would let me have them.”]
