U.S. ORBIT ATTEMPT
Failure To Ignite IN Z.P.A -Keuter—VoPV«flM> WALLOPS ISLAND (Virginia). June 30 An attempt to orbit a new United States satellite failed today when the third stage of a Scout rocket did not ignite after soaring nearly TO miles The cause of toe malfunction was not determined immediately. The 1871 b satellite in the nose of the rocket had been designed to measure the impact of potentially deadly meteor particles on toe skin of a manned spaceship. Scientists had hoped to send the satellite into an orbit ranging from 240 to 620 mile* above the earth.
Instead, it presumably plunged into the Atlantic, United Press International reported. Officials said that another attempt to launch toe aame type of satellite would be made in about a month A duplicate of the rocket and its instruments were available for toe second experiment.
Preparations for today's launching began 18 months ago with the designing of toe complicated instrumentation of the satellite.
