SILVER PLOUGH EVENT

Blenheim Man Wins At Hororata After taking third place in six successive qualifying events over toe last two years, I. Jordan, of Blenheim, qualified for the final of toe Ahl antic Silver Plough at toe Hororata Young Farmers’ Club ploughing match at Coalgate on Saturday. Conditions were cold, with occasional skiffs of rain, and at one time a few flakes of snow fell. There was a variation in toe plots which extended across toe paddock but. in the conditions prevailing. there was a remarkably good standard of work in club and qualifying events. Points awarded by the fudges in the main event were not high, and this ha« been typical of the work of Silver Plough contestants this vear. The last two years have been relatively dry through the ploughing season and competitors apparently have accustomed themselves to these oenditions With the much jvetter conditions this winter toe ground at most of the matches has been harder to handle. Tn some plots on Saturday the furrows did not pack down well and appeared to cling inrtead of turning off toe mouldboards evenly. In some of the club events competitors encountered difficulties with varying soil within the plot Judges for the Silver Plough qualifying event were Messrs J. D. Henderson (Courtenay), T. F. Carter (Lincoln), and A. L. Coleman (Ledbrooks). Judges for the club and district events were Messrs J. G. Carter. C. E Read. J. W. Jowers, and T Blakely An added attraction was the Young Farmers’ Club South Island longboard challenge cup, which was won by G Smith (Hororata), and toe Canterbury Council shortboard challenge cup, which was won by G. Norton (Temuka). These two trophy events could have been better sunported. Three Temuka ploughmen made up the field for the shortboard class and toe longboard event was competed in by two from Hororata. two from Kirwee. one from Rakaia, and one from Temuka. Results were:— Silver Plough qualifying event: I. Jordan (Blenheim). 148 points. 1; W A. Brsdlev (■Courtenay). 139 66. 2; J S Rawlinson (Mettnen), 132. 3: 1. J. Maw (Methven), 130, 4 Open event: W.
