ST. BEDE’S WINS

6-3 Defeat Of Christ’s Speedy forwards able to make the most of broken play gave St. Bede’s a close but deserved victory over Christ’s College at St. Bede’s College on Saturday. The score, 8-3, was a fair Indication of St Bede’s superiority. In the first half, with the wind behind, St. Bede’s was constantly on attack and in the second half, when Christ s had the benefit of the wind, play was confined mainly to the St. Bede’s half. Intermittent rain fell throughout the game and the ground was very greasy The two packs became indistinguishable after about 20 minutes’ play. The teams were:— St. Bede’S College.—C. C. Follow: D. A. Hom. A. C. Alfeld. B. M. Teen; M. J. Tunnicliff, R. C. Watkins; J. P. Siola; M. Brownlee; A. J. Collins, P. D. Cunningham, B. J. Neilson. M. O. Moran: K. F. Foley, B. R. Dobson. M. F. Dobson. Christ’s College.—M. Henshall; R. A. Spence, P. R. Black, R S. Lewis: W. N. Scales, K. J. Prain; E. T. Ormond; C. R. Gresson: J. S. Baird, S. C. Nichol!, R. J. Knight, N. A. Lester; T. H Parson. R. G. Gunn, G. A. Hargreaves. Except for one foray into St. Bede's territory Christ's was constantly on defence in the first spell. The defence was good, however, and it was only after about 25 minutes that St Bede’s scored. Moran, after dribbling the ball about 20 yards, dived over the line. The St, Bede's forwards were much ouicker to the loose ball than their opponents and the conditions made kicking and chasing much more practicable than trying to throw the ball about. Mainly because of Nichol, Christ’s gained most of the ball from the line-outs but tn the scrums and loose rucks the St. Bede’s forwards had the advantage. Brownlee, ably supported by Moran, was In the thick of things all day. These two were probably the best forwards on the ground. Baird, on the side of the scrum for Christ’s, also went very well. The St. Bede’s full-back, Fulton, was the best player seen and his calmness when taking high kicks in the face of oncom. ing forwards was outstanding. His handling of the greasy ball was excellent and his linekicklrw surprisingly long and accurate. Solia. at half-baek for St Bede's employed the tactical kick over the opposing backs to good effect but could have given his backs an occasional run. Few Opportnnttlei Neither of the two sets of backs was given many opportunities but the St. Bede’s left wing. Teen, made the most of any allowed him and his try was the result of a determined run Of the Christ's backs the first five-eighths. Prain, looked most dangerous. He received consistent attention from both Moran and Brownlee Tries for St. Bede's were scored bv Moran and Teen Scales scored for Christ’s. Mr L. S. Kirk was the referee.
