“N.Z. Could Sell Lamb In Europe”
(N.Z Press Association—Copynflht) LONDON, July 2. New Zealand lamb could wean Europeans away from veal, and under-cut the French, German and Italian farmers, the “Sunday Telegraph” said today.
The newspaper said this in commenting on visits to New Zealand, Australia and Canada of the Commonwealth Relations Secretary. Mr Duncan Sandys, to explain how they would be affected by any British association with the European Common Market. An editorial said: “As he
seeks to reassure New Zealand about the effects of our joining the Common Market, someone may repeat to Mr Sandys the old adage that the Continent is closed to lamb. Has anyone ever tried to find out whether this is true? “It is not easy to believe that modern methods of mass persuasion could not wean many continentals from veal to lamb. “Once the taste was formed, could not the Ne\ Zealander under-cut the French, German and Italian farmer? “Certainly he could; and that is probably the mam reason why New Zealanders do not expect their meat to get past the bartiers of the Six. “When protection is the real reason for difficulty let us say so and not blame taste.”
