June 29 What is believed to be the fastest crossing of the Tas. man ever made was completed by a T 13 Canberra of the Royal New Zealand Air Force Bomber Operational Conversion Unit. Ohakea. this afternoon. On the return leg of a navi, gational exercise, the aircraft made the 1210-mile overhead, to overhead trip from Rich, mond. near Sydney. to Ohakea in 2hr 18inin. In the early stages of the flight, the aircraft was aided by a 160-knot tailwind at 38.000 feet, but this dropped in the latter half of the journey. The Canberra was captained by Squadron leader I Gillard. with Squadron Leader C. Hansen as navigator. The second pilot was Group Captain D F. St George, formerly commanding officer at Ohakea, who is now group captain, operations, at the Air Department. Wellington.
