TENNIS Hungarian Beats Otway In Wimbledon Singles

(N Z.PA.-K»ut«r— Copyright) LONDON, June 27. New Zealand’s second and last representative in the singles at Wimbledon, M. A. Otway, was beaten today by the Hungarian, I. Gulyas, after an extraordinary seesawing game in which each in turn played well, really badly, and then staged a revival in the final set which might have gone to either.

Gulyas won 3-6, 8-4, 6-0. 0-6, 6-4. He started off by muffing everything, giving spectators and probably Otway, too, the impression he would be easy meat. Then he suddenly struck form, pulled many a canny shot from the racket and had the New Zealander obviously worried.

In the early stages Gulyas was putting everything where Otway was and Otway was putting everything where the Hungarian was not. Then there were inexplicable collapses in the third and fourth sets, first by Otway and then by Gulyas, when each failed to take a game from his opponent. Their deciding set was a tussle, but, although both brightened considerably, there was not much inspiration left after an hour and a half's play in scorching sun. An 18-year-old Australian, Miss M. Smith, was the undoubted star of the play. She celebrated her debut on the centre court with a nerveracking, three-set victory over the American player. Miss N. Richey, in a firstround match worthy of the finals.

Nervousness put the powerful Australian girl completely out of touch and she lost the first set 3-6.

Miss Smith said afterwards: “I was petrified out there. I was just so nervous I seemed to be in a daze.”

A capacity audience, including Princess Marina. Duchess of Kent, saw Miss Smith get on top in a tense struggle in the second and third sets to win 3-6. 6-3, 6-4.

In another highlight of yesterday’s play, a 20-year-old Australian, K. Fletcher, caused the upset of the tournament so far by disposing of the leading Swedish player, U. Schmidt, in successive sets.

Playing the best tennis of has career, Fletcher used his big serve and power drives to make the Swede look like a second-rate player. The Australian won 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Today’s play, in perfect weather, saw the completion of the first round of the men's singles, which was disrupted by rain on the opening day. ‘‘Ladies’ Day” also saw the glamour girls of international tennis wearing their skirts shorter than ever before—an average length from waist to hem. of about 13$ inches compared with 16 inches last year. The blonde German. Miss I. Buding, hit the top fashion, note wjth an all-paper, fireproof “throw-away” dress and a coat of woven glass.
