DESTRUCTION OF BIRDS

Dogs On Campbell Island Dogs taken to Campbell Island are causing concern to the Forest and Bird Protection Society. The Dominion president (Mr R. C. Nelson), speaking to the Canterbury branch in Christchurch on Thursday evening, said the dogs had destroyed birds. Mr Nelson said the island had rockhopper penguins. Royal albatrosses, thousands of mollyhawks and sea mammals. Some years ago a farmer had wanted to put sheep and cattle on the island but the difficulties in returning them to New Zealand had been too great, said Mr Nelson. The sheep and cattle were now wild and the society was trying to grt them removed. The Government intended to install a freezing plant on the island for this purpose, he said. Within the last two months two dogs had been taken to the island, This should not have been done, said Mr Nelson.
