FIRST BATTALION IMPRESSES

Minister Visits Burnham

The men who will go to Malaya with the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, and who are in training at Burnham Military Camp, have impressed the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre). They should do extremely well, not only as soldiers but also as ambassadors for their country, he said on Saturday. He said the problems set before the senior officers during Exercise Waitara had been practical ones of the type the Army could be expected to meet on active service. The exercise had called for plenty of clear, quick thinking and had given plenty of scope for initiative and originality, said Mr Eyre. The Minister left Burnham for Wellington on Saturday afternoon.
