LOSSES OF CHUKOR

1080 Held To Blame (N.Z. Press Association) OAMARU. June 9. A claim that recent lasses af chukor in two separate areas in Central Otago established beyond doubt that the use of 1080 poison was responsible for the destruction of game birds, said Mr E. W. Morton at a meeting of the Waitaki Acclimatisation Society. Recently 1080 had been used for the first time on rabbits and in one valley 120 chukor had disappeared. In another valley 15 dead chukor had been found. Mr Morton said that the two areas in question had been, for many years, breeding grounds for chukor and they had now been virtually exterminated. Mr Morton suggested that acclimatisation socieities should formulate a policy of paying the additional cost to rabbit boards to have select breeding areas for game cleared by methods other than by poisoning with 1080.
