Sir,—The farmers of Waipara have launched a shocker by asking the Minister of Agriculture for £25.000. Arc these the same cockles who have growled about taxation" It would be much better and cheaper for the Government to buy their land and cut it up for settlement. We saw a little of this in the Hurunui area after the last war. but unfortunately this was stopped about 1951. We need closer settlement of all North Canterbury. with centra) points with big machinery for hire to tackle the tussock, arid a research station; strip planting of trees, which has been neglected .even though these have been subsidised Nassella tussock is a lightdemanding plant: so try tc crush it out with similai plants and grasses. Cocksfool is one of its enemies, anc too big holdings are its friends.—Yours, etc., SILVER TUSSOCK. June 7, 1961.
