Racing Wood Gates For Coast
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, June 2. The Greymouth District Committee has ordered four units of Wood starting gates (which will allow for 16 horses* to be made available at the Westport Jockey Club's meeting on September 30 This was announced by the secretary of the district committee (Mr R. Fitzgerald). The five district clubs purchasing the gates have agreed to share the initial cost of £2600 in proportion to each club's share of the 1960 I per cent. levy. The Nelson Jockey Club is interested in being associated with the purchase and. together with the Marlborough Racing Club, will inquire about the probable hire charge. The gates are in units of four and weigh seven hundredweight. They are mechanically operated, requiring one man to a unit on race days for removal from the track.
It will be necessary to have a specially-built trailer for transporting the gates and. before race meetings, a unit will be made available to clubs for training horses.
