Ford Defeats Palmer
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) INDIANAPOLIS, May 28. The defending champion D. Ford today sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a sudden death playoff with the United States open champion Arnold Palmer to win the “500" Festival open golf tournament here. ’ Ford captured the 9000 dollar first prize by staving off Palmer, who finished the final round with a five under par 66, to take the second prize of 4600 dollars. One of the most disappointed men on the course was Gary Player (South Africa) who finished about half an hour before Ford and Palmer played out the final hole. Player, who shot a 67. had a 72-hole total of 274 and seemed reasonably certain of gaining at least a tie with Ford or Palmer.
Ford—the 54-hole leader by two strokes over Palmer and Player—had gone without a tournament victory in 32 consecutive meetings since he won last year’s speedway tournament.
Peter Thomson (Australia) playing in the same threesome with Player, drove a tee shot which struck a woman spectator’s nose. She bled profusely and was taken to a hospital for treatment "I felt terrible about It.” Player said. “It made me bilious. I felt spent. The accident cost me at least a tie." Thomson bad a 73 today to finish in sixth place With four others on 282.
