Obituary MR R. J. SMITH

(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NTH. May. 26. A former president of the New Zealand Rugby Union and for 50 years the Bush Rugby Union's representative on the New Zealand Rugby Football Union, Mr R. J. (“Sonny”) Smith, of Pahiatua, died yesterday. Mr Smith was 79.

His enthusiasm for Rugby made Mr Smith one of the most widely known Rugby men in New Zealand. He represented his home union on the Rugby field in every position and played against two international sides. Mr Smith was also president of the Pahiatua Racing Club, a vice-president of the A. and P. Association, and a member of the Boxing Association.
