CONGESTION AT PORT

Rain Delays Work

Congestion at Lyttelton has eased slightly with the departure of several ships but rain stopped work on the waterfront for about three hours yesterday. Trucks are still in short supply but when labour was ordered back for normal overtime last evening there were sufficient for full work. Two vessels, the Dutch motor ship Straat Malakka, which had been discharging South African cargo, and the Norwegian freighter Reinholt, which had been discharging North American cargo, stopped for the night. Two coasters, the Storm and the Pateke, arrived yesterday and Were idle all day. There is no likelihood of an improvement in the congestion for another week, according to the secretary of the Port Employers’ Association at Lyttelton (Mr W. F. Sillars).
