WOMEN ABOARD SHIP
Seamen’s Union Rules
There are penalties under the Shipping and Seaman's Act covering women going aboard ship in port without the permission of the master of the vessel, said the secretary of the Lyttelton branch of the Seamen's Union (Mr T. Martin) in a statement yesterday. “The New Zealand Seamen's Union goes much further and expels from membership those members who are guilty of this offence, said !Mr Martin. “This arose from a tragedy that occurred aboard a costal vessel some years ago. In a melee while women were aboard, a seaman lost his life,” Mr Martin said. “In the main. New Zealand seamen abide rigidly by this decision of their union. Perhaps an isolated case may arise where a new member tries to flout the union’s decision. but he knows full well the circumstances if he is caught. This means expulsion from membership,” Mr Martin said.
