EXERCISE AT BURNHAM

Course For Army Officers The first phase of “Exercise Waitara,” for officers of the Regular and Territorial Forces, will start at Burnham Military Camp on Monday. The exercise, which is under the control of the Chief of General Staff (Major-General L. W. Thornton). will consist of military problems posed to the officers, who are expected to find a solution after discussion with other members of the course.

The first part of the exercise will be attended by more than 120 Regular Force officers up to the rank of major. The second course, from June 9 to 11. will be attended by 120 senior officers of the Regular and Territorial Forces. This year’s exercise will deal with the supposed problems that would be faced by the Australian Army’s Pentropic Division in South-east Asia, where insurgency and infiltration of enemy forces might have to be counteracted. Relief maps and scale models of the area where the supposed action is taking place will be used by the instructors. Five United States Army officers from Hawaii who are at present in New Zealand under the exchange scheme operating between New Zealand and the United States will attend the second course.
