RUGBY AMENDMENTS TO RULES PROPOSED NEXT MONTH
Three important amendments to the Canterbury Rugby Union’s rules will be proposed at the half-yearly meeting of delegates on June 14. Mr A. K. Johnson, a member of the management committee, will move an
amendment to Rule 7 ot the union which would reduce the voting strength of some clubs ait the annual meeting. At present clubs are entitled to send one delegate for every two teams in the competition, with a maximum of four delegates. This may be amended so that senior and junior clubs can have a delegate for every two teams, other than teams in the under-weight grades. Senior clubs will still be entitled to an extra delegate.
A remit to change the system of promotion and relegation matches for senior and senior reserve grades will be introduced.
Rule 18 ia) of the competitions committee says that the
result of a relegation match does not apply if the winning team’s club in the competition immediately below that of the senior grade is already
represented in the senior grade.
It is proposed to amend this as follows: "This shall not apply should the winning team’s club in the competition immediately below that of the senior grade be already represented by two teams in that grade. Should this apply, the relegation match shall be played by the team next in succession.”
Under rule 7 of the permit committee no player is allowed to take part in any of the Canterbury union’s competitions if he lives in a sub-union district unless permission has been obtained from the sub-union. The rule,
however, does not apply to •bona fide students of the University of Canterbury, (secondary schools or Teachers' College. An amendment to the last section will be brought forward to read as follows: “This rule shall not apply to bona fide students of the arts, music, engineering, fine arts, commerce, science and law faculties of the University of Canterbury, secondary schools, or Teachers’ College." This would mean that students of Lincoln College
would be excluded from playing for the University club in the town competition when Canterbury Agricultural College becomes an associated college of the University of Canterbury next year.
