A City Festival
Sir, Christchurch can fairly claim to lead New Zealand ini its first Festival of Shakespeare next Augustan event of great artistic value which can only enhance the city’s prestige. But plans (reported today) for an expanded festival between February 24 and March 10 next year need appraisal. What are the "many other organisations holding festivals during these weeks”? Will it be a festival of the arts or merely tire established summer Floral Festival with cultural and sporting events imposed? Since the Proms j never suffer from lack of j audiences to use them as a I highlight is of no significance I unless a concert could be dei voted to New Zealand artists and composers. Would Christchurch support, say, a fortnight of international cinema (a feature annually of Auckland's festivals) — films which seem to arouse little interest when any reach here in the normal way? I am sure KerridgeOdeon (and the Little Film Society) would assist.— Yours, etc., LAURENCE HAYSTON. May 25, 1961.
