SUBSIDING EARTH

Concern At Injuries (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 26. The chief engineer of the Labour Department (Mr E. E Hendrikson) has expressed grave concern at the number of accidents to workmen caused by subsiding earth. He will visit Auckland soon to discuss the problem with local unions and contractors

The senior safety inspector in Auckland (Mr H. Clifford) said today the purpose of the conference would be to reveal the need for and to take steps toiwards greater safety in trench and tunnel construction. Five falls have occurred this year—al! in the last three months. Last year, four persons were killed by accidents of this nature in the Auckland province. Three others were injured .
