PRAISE FOR SAMOANS
“Very Good Workers” (From Out Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Mav 25. A quick defence of the working capabilities of Samoans in his Christchurch factory was made by Mr J. H. Scales in the Arbitration Court this afternoon. During the hearing of the case involving New Zealand Wallboards. Ltd., Mr P. J Taylor, secretary of the Canterbury Master Plasterers’ union, said that “Samoans, who can’t even speak English, were employed in a Christchurch wallboard factory” He added: “I say this to illustrate the calibre of the labour required.” Mr Scales, another witness ■called by the Inspector of Awards, Christchurch (Mr A. B. Tuck), acknowledged that it was in his factory that the Samoans worked.
Perhaps they are not as fast as New Zealanders, but we have no trouble with them on their work. They are very good, indeed,” he said
