WAIMATE CLUB’S MEETING

Halberg And Snell Sought

Leading New Zealand athletes, including the Olympic gold medallists M. G. Halberg and P. G. Snell, are being sought by the Waimate Athletic Club for meetings during Christmas and New Year.

The Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association received a letter to this effect from the club last night. The letter said that R. A. Williams, the New Zealand decathlon champion, competed each year at Waimate, and would be able to arrange the programme. At the request of the centre, the club named its preferences. It said It desired a sprinter, possibly D. S. Norris (the national 220 yards champion), who could also compete in the hop, step, and jump and broad Jump; a middle-distance runner, possibly Snell or G. Philpott. the national 880 yards champion; a long-distance runner. possibly Halberg; and a woman sprinter. The club did not name its choice in this respect. The secretary of the centre (Mr I. Teague) reported that he had written to the Auckland centre seeking the services of these athletes. The meeting confirmed his action.
