Import Licensing

Sir, —I was disturbed at your editorial of Saturday last, condemning import licensing, born of necessity. Perhaps you do not know of the indignities and insults some of our manufacturers had to endure from their overseas suppliers when, under the previous National Government, under the guise of exchange control, they were unable to meet their overseas comm.itmer.ts. during which time tinned Continental hams, tea sets at 200 guineas, plus numerous other unnecessary luxuries, were imported. The population increase of approximately 50.000 per annum, with its numerous requirements, also seem to have been overlooked. No-one will admit that import controls are perfect. but no-one has yet brought forward a more satisfactory scheme.—Yours, etc., B. FAIR. May 15. 1961.
